The waves meet in their own motion, colliding, slapping against each other, and breaking apart again. The water rises, falls back, and carries across its surface bright patterns like stirred-up clouds. The dark areas in the foreground are not solid bodies but heavy water, condensed, without foam. The foam itself drapes fine veils across it, brightening the surface and setting it vibrating. The result is an image full of contrasts—of buoyancy and weight, of brilliance and depth. Sylt in the early morning.
