Fogging Venice

Here, Thomas Düwer depicts a tranquil, almost classical scene: gondolas glide through thick fog, the shore recedes into pastel façades and subdued light. The composition recalls veduta painting, but the figures in the foreground bring the present into the picture—tourists in caps, with phones, striking selfie poses. The gentle blur in the background contrasts with the crisp detail of the boats. Reflections of light dance on the water; everything seems frozen in the moment between movement and stillness. Düwer achieves a subtle rupture here: a romantic backdrop meets touristic reality. An image between longing and snapshot, carefully composed and yet full of casual “today.”
